What Is a Recall Petition?

A recall is a lawful, non-partisan process that allows constituents to formally state that they no longer feel their MLA is representing them. If 13,150 eligible voters in this constituency sign the petition, it will trigger a by-election and serve as a clear reminder to all Members of the Legislative Assembly that their role is to represent the people they serve.

The recall process is non-partisan, overseen by Elections Alberta, and governed by strict legislated requirements to ensure fairness, accuracy, and integrity.

Recall exists precisely for moments when public trust and representation are in question - before neglect becomes permanent.

Your Choice, Your Voice

This recall effort exists because residents of Cypress-Medicine Hat asked for a way to be heard. Democracy is not a spectator sport. It requires citizens remain informed and engaged to ensure a healthy, functioning government.

Signing a recall petition means you believe our MLA is no longer representing the interests, safety, and/or wellbeing of our community.

Not signing shouldn’t mean agreement with everything this government is pushing forward. But recent recall outcomes show that when petitions do not succeed, this government publicly views the result as a “strong vote of confidence” and a “validation” of its agenda, regardless of how many residents raised valid concerns (Nicolaides, Jan 21, 2026).

Local Concerns

Agriculture

Rural Policing, Public Statements, and Accountability

Water & Land Stewardship

Agriculture is the backbone of our region’s economy and identity. Farms, ranches, irrigation systems, and food production support livelihoods throughout Cypress–Medicine Hat and beyond. Residents expect their MLA to advocate for policies that sustain agricultural land, strengthen rural communities, and protect the long-term viability of farming and ranching in southeastern Alberta.

Rural Policing, Public Statements, and Accountability

Water & Land Stewardship

Water from the Eastern Slopes feeds the South Saskatchewan River system that sustains farms, ranches, municipalities, and ecosystems throughout southern Alberta. What happens upstream directly affects communities downstream. For a region whose economy and future depend on reliable water supplies, protecting headwaters and watershed health is not a partisan issue - it is fundamental to our shared future. Despite all of this, when coal mining was discussed in our legislature, our MLA remained silent on all the concerns brought forward by local constituents and experts in the field.

Rural Policing, Public Statements, and Accountability

Rural Policing, Public Statements, and Accountability

Rural Policing, Public Statements, and Accountability

Public safety looks different in rural communities. Long distances, limited officer availability, and response times all affect how safe residents feel in their homes and on their roads. Cypress–Medicine Hat residents expect honest discussions about rural policing, realistic solutions to service gaps, and decisions that reflect the needs of smaller communities.
A story shared in the Legislature by MLA Wright regarding policing in Cypress Medicine Hat, in support of legislation to enhance provincial police forces, included a story involving the RCMP that was later publicly contradicted by the RCMP. This situation has raised concerns among residents about accuracy, transparency, and trust in the democratic process.

Healthcare & Education

Youth Supports and Local Services

Rural Policing, Public Statements, and Accountability

Access to healthcare remains one of the most pressing issues for families across the region. Many residents continue to struggle to find a family doctor, face long waits for care, or travel significant distances for specialized services. Rural communities rely on strong advocacy to ensure health services remain accessible and sustainable close to home.

Education is central to the future of Cypress–Medicine Hat. Families want classrooms where students can learn, teachers are supported, and schools have the resources needed to address growing complexity in the classroom.

Across the region, parents and educators have raised concerns about class sizes, staffing pressures, and the challenges teachers face supporting students with diverse learning needs. These issues affect student outcomes, teacher retention, and the overall health of local schools.

Residents expect their MLA to advocate consistently for solutions that support students, teachers, and school communities throughout the riding.

Affordability Pressures

Youth Supports and Local Services

Families and small businesses across Cypress–Medicine Hat are facing growing financial pressure. Residents frequently raise concerns about the rising cost of everyday necessities, including housing, insurance, utilities, and government service fees.

Several policy decisions in recent years have contributed to these pressures. The removal of rent controls has allowed rents to increase without a provincial cap, while registry and licensing fees, insurance premiums, and other administrative costs have risen for many households.

Auto insurance costs in Alberta have continued to increase despite government interventions, with premiums rising in recent years and further increases projected as system reforms continue.

Residents also point to increasing service fees and administrative costs associated with basic services such as registries, licensing, and other government transactions.

For families already managing rising grocery prices, fuel costs, and housing expenses, these additional costs can compound financial strain.

Many residents believe their MLA should more actively advocate for policies that reduce cost-of-living pressures and ensure government spending decisions reflect the financial realities facing households across Cypress–Medicine Hat.

Access to safe spaces and supportive services for vulnerable youth is an important part of community wellbeing. In Cypress–Medicine Hat, residents were concerned when funding for a local youth shelter was reduced and resources were redirected to an organization outside the riding.

For many families and community members, this raised questions about whether enough advocacy occurred within the democratic process to maintain those supports locally. When services for vulnerable youth change or disappear, the effects can be felt across schools, families, and community organizations.

Some residents say these concerns contributed to their belief that stronger representation is needed to ensure local services remain accessible to youth who need them close to home.

Community Engagement & Representation

Community Engagement & Representation

Community Engagement & Representation

Healthy democracies depend on meaningful dialogue between elected officials and the people they represent. In Cypress–Medicine Hat, some residents have described recent town halls and public meetings as leaving questions unanswered or concerns unresolved.

Several residents say they did not receive clear communication about how their feedback would be considered or how their MLA intended to represent local priorities in the Legislature.

For some constituents, these experiences contributed to a growing belief that the recall process may be the only remaining way to seek representation.
